Interestingly, I've personally never had a hard time with a gay friend of the girl. They've actually even helped me in the past. And since they're socially savvy like you mentioned, they can probably tell that I have a good vibe and would likely please the girl I'm trying to meet.
White knight friends on the other hand while they might not immediately intervene, will leer at you constantly and the second you look away or say hi to a buddy who came by they will pull the girl away for any reason (let's go outside for a smoke, get a drink).
