My totally non-scientific theory is that he was taking too many painkillers which became toxic. For years it's been said he needed double hip replacement surgery and/or he had one. Whether or not he had the operation done, he was probably in significant pain, and sought to dull it somehow. Just a wild guess.
This makes sense. On his current tour, he just sits at the piano and sings -- no band.
