All natural alternative, pineapple and kiwis are a good start
If you take moderate to large amounts of protein and work out hard they are advantageous. They are not a necessity but from a comfort stand point they reduce the negative sides of heavy protein intake and there's been some studies done saying it can help reduce inflammation from working out. At worst they're not a negative and you'll get something out of them. More than you can say for most supps. I definitely use them.
