This is itself an old idea; there is little that is particularly fresh about asserting the need for a new age of reason or whatever.
There is something very 20th century, very 17th even, about striding around the village declaiming the non-existence of "the big fairy man in the sky".
That was never what the religions were about, anyway. That was what they taught to children and illiterates to give an approximate sense of their meaning.
