You're probably misunderstanding what "keeping the door open" means.
Think of adjoining hotel rooms where there's a doorway in between them. There are TWO doors. Hers and yours. If you don't lock yours and throw away the key, when hers is open again you can walk right on in and fuck her brains out (if you choose).
It's not keeping the door open and watching it day and night hoping that she'll walk back in. That would definitely be desperation.
