It's common knowledge that fag means a bundle of sticks - and usually it's taken to mean that normal society was so hateful towards them that it would throw them in the fire.
I see it in a different way, another reason why they were called this: their very nature is to set the world on fire, to destroy and consume everything. No society which accepts it will survive. It is the very definition of contra-naturam. Therefore, no groups advocating for its 'rights' will ever be up to anything good - even if it is only opposing gay-bashing and HIV research (and it never is, by its very nature). Every dying society adopts this as part of 'normality'. Decadent monarchs made it so sodomy was called the 'kingly vice'. Certainly now it is so trendy to be a sodomite we could say it again. They truly sit at the top of the social hierarchy.
We don't even need to go so far as to point out that NAMBLA was part of the original movement, that destruction of the family as an institution was their stated goal or that they thought age of consent laws were inherently oppressive to gay people (go figure).
The only LGBT activism that should be tolerated in a society is one that helps them stop what they're doing. Anything else will consume society in a pile of flaming garbage, to the point where if it's not burning already, you wish it was - I mean, that's what I feel when I see stuff like the drag kids.
