But the crime they were convicted of is usually some very broad category, like "sexual assault". Without knowing the details of the crime, you really don't know very much. Statutory rape, for example, is also a subcategory of "sexual assault" so in my example above that's what the guy's crime would be listed as. You're right that it's possible to differentiate to some extent between convictions of different severity (although most people would never bother and just assume the worst that comes into their minds) but the categories are still so broad that they can encompass a wide variety of offenses.
