For 40 lonely years he led the crusade, starting off almost alone, until as an old man he saw the British parliament ban slavery. Within a few more decades it had (legally) disappeared from almost the whole world.
A great hero. Also a white, male Christian. And almost completely thrown down the memory hole because of this.
