I think a lot depends on one's job and interaction with the city.

My job and my experiences were like a murder trail through various parts of London.

I'll accept that London has always been a bit rough as a capital /world city but nothing compared to Manila, Washington-as-was, St Louis, LA, Johannesburg, Rio etc. etc.

Probably the gap in violence between London and those cities is still there.

After the London Riots - riots that I had the privilege of being present in - a US gang specialist said that in comparison to the States.. London gangs were pretty soft and disorganised.

The issue is the change in just a few years.

Black policewomen I knew left Hackney after they joined. They couldn't imagine living there once they saw the change that was going on. They'd been happy to lead pretty low key lower middle class lives leading up to the Change.

I'd struggle to think of areas in Zones 1, 2 and 3 that are untouched by threat, gangs and violence.

I lived on a street in Ealing West London that had nice houses and Range Rovers but unfortunately I knew the new-arrival Afghan and his little shop that ran that street for all the basement dwellers. Vicious and violent man that everyone feared.

But back in the 90's there might have been the murder mile and the Yardies but most of London wasn't like that.

I used to train at the Linford Christie Stadium in Acton, West London where most of the people I trained with were black Londoners. In the late 90's they were joking about the violence and saying don't respond to the kids in Harlesden, "they'll just stab you because they don't want to get blood on their Mosch"

Fast forward a few years and then the Somali kids turned up. Cheeky little shits interrupting our training right inside the stadium, the guys just went up and went toe to toe with them.
They shat themselves cos none of them can fight.
Fast forward and we're dealing with knife threats, vandalism, break ins and we're getting cars into and out of the stadium, buddy system for walking to the tube.
Back in the 90's that just didn't exist.

It is getting off the scale and the police and council are now officially useless.

Forest Gate was walking the gauntlet when I lived there briefly. middle of the day on the high street getting shoulder barged by Africans offering me out, at the same time getting called a batty boy by Pakistanis from the back of their cars. I started calling it racist gate in my mind.

I worked with a Ukrainian cleaner in Hounslow who was gaming the system. Brought his family over. He was so depressed. He felt like he was living amongst rats.
Russian migrant in Stamford Hill complaining to me what a violent shithole London was. Had his wife and kids over with him and a drug dealer just out of jail making threats opposite.
The guy crashed his car into the nearby wall and it was about to collapse on the courtyard.
