Pao has a history of suing her former employers for discrimination...so, rather than labeling her a troublemaker and avoiding her, she gets promoted from business partnerships (with no major success to point to) to interim CEO. A stunningly stupid move.
Her first act as CEO was:
Then she started shutting down reddits.
Then she fired the employee who communicated with moderators - a chubby girl named Victoria Taylor. Users had enough and started the latest freak out.
I'm guessing that, after the fathate (and similar) subreddit closure, Ellen thought she could do whatever she wanted and people would complain but accept it. It appears she was wrong.
I'd further guess that this is all window dressing in advance of an IPO. Ellen's hoping to get a massive payday.
