I think the "spit on the finger" hypothesis would definitely be a way. It doesn't take much. I was on the jury for a trial that included DNA evidence. The intruder to a swig out of a water jug in the homeowner's fridge. Left DNA on the lip of the jug. You don't need to bleed or cum on something to leave behind DNA evidence. There may well be more to the story, but I don't think we can pick it apart just by saying that a finger wouldn't leave any DNA.
