I just don't really know if I would trust the guy. In order for him to win the democratic nomination he would have to abandon or water down many of his old positions on things like immigration, trade, and affirmative action, something he as already shown a tendency to do even without the pressures of an increasingly SJW national democratic base.
I could like the guy, but it's hard to believe that a man who believes the things he claims to believe would gain support in the democratic party. He could get away with that stuff in Virginia, because they would just excuse it as "well he has to say that stuff to win in the south."
He also has a reputation for being a total jerk in person. Not that a president having a warm and fuzzy personality is that important in terms of policy, but having a nasty personality quirk is a liability in a campaign.
He will also have a rough time in the primaries when the SJW democrats dredge up his sleazy novels:

It didn't have much effect when George Allen's campaign brought them up, but he's a republican, and he was in the middle of that "macaca" scandal. Webb's democratic opponents and their media allies will have a field day creepshaming this guy.
