In the Heights my experience is that people seem happy to speak in Spanish.

Yea, I don't really know any Nuyoricans who speak Spanish. That's sort of a "thing" in New York, other Latinos are all blown away at Puerto Ricans having no idea how to speak Spanish.
And even most Latinos here who are young basically take it as a sign of disrespect if you speak to them in Spanish, like "What, you think I'm some idiot who can't even speak English? You think I just got here off the boat? Fuck you!"
This is my experience as a white guy who has lived abroad and learned fluent Spanish.
100% co-signed. As a white guy who speaks very fluent Spanish, it's surprisingly useless in NYC. Even the Mexicans at my corner deli who speak broken English get annoyed if I speak to them in Spanish.
That said, I haven't spent much time up in the Heights, so maybe it's different there.
