Nothing makes you conservative faster than having a kid to look after. When most people have kids and almost immediately change their outlook. They move from the city to the suburbs, get rid of the cable TV, and start looking after the interests of their own family, rather than general societal concerns like global warming.
The longer you keep people in suspended adolescence, the more they'll vote for the party who is behind handouts for adults. But more importantly, the more they'll patronize the clubs, restaurants, and bars that are part of the advertising base of the New York Times or buy whatever crap MTV is peddling.
A society of atomized consumers is exactly what these people want. Families and adults are anathema to their consumer/voting base. This is why they disdain the '50s, suburbia, church, and families and worship hipsters and the like.
