I agree that people in rich countries tend to be happier and warmer/friendlier, not cold and bitter. In very poor countries, the kind of friendless was more of these guys wanting to form a connection with a foreigner, looking at me almost like I was an opportunity. A couple times now, I've asked a random dude for directions, he would physically take me where I need to go, and then ask to hangout again later.
