the problem was that the big expenditures were made before marriage, and there weren't any real assets accumulated during the period that could outstrip the debt. So going into marriage, only 6 months of their joined income could be considered marital property for equitable distribution purposes.
In theory, however, she still needs to pay him alimony/maintenance. I'm guessing the judge made the reasonable determination that 6 months is not sufficient to support the other guy for very long.
