No, if they are being brought to HK under a FDH visa, they must live with the family and work for them full time.

Q29:Can an FDH live away from his/her employer's home?
A29:
No. An FDH should work and reside in the employer's residence in accordance with Clause 3 of the Standard Employment Contract (ID407). The employer is required to provide the FDH with free accommodation as per the standard specified in the "Schedule of Accommodation and Domestic Duties" of the employment contract.

Of course there may be cases like you describe but in that case they're breaching the law and these cases certainly don't constitute "plenty" of the maids in HK. Since renting in HK costs a fortune paying for your helper's apartment would hardly be economically sensible anyway for most people since the whole draw to employ SEA maids is their cheap cost to begin with.

Anyway, takeaway is that nobody in this thread should expect the maids to have their own place.
Thanks for informing. I stand corrected.
Never said they had their own place. I said they were staying with a cohabitant. ie staying the night with a boyfriend at his place.
They changed the law in 2003.

Employers who have obtained the Director of Immigration's approval before 1 April 2003 to let their FDHs live out can continue to do so, so long as they continue to employ FDHs without a break of more than 6 months.
