I'll give women a little more credit. I think this comes from their experience with making themselves more attractive. Most things women do to attract men are temporary. Every morning they start off more or less the same level of attractiveness as they did the morning before. With the exception of a fat girl losing weight there's very little permanent change a woman can effect that will make her significantly more attractive to men. Because that's all they know they view any male attempts at self improvement to be as shallow. They assume anything a guy does to improve his chances with women goes away by the time he wakes up the next morning. They're so used to just being attractive that they can't comprehend how somebody would have to work hard to create any kind of permanent change in their attractiveness.
The upside of this is that if you do change yourself for the better women will just assume you were born that way. Don't dissuade them otherwise.
