I'm surprised you rank NYC as #2, most high end nightlife venues here are pretty small (even midtown Lavo is relatively small). Irrelevant for you, but for guys trying to learn can be a real problem since it's essentially a social circle.

I've said it before and will say it again: Nightlife in LA is at the bottom of the Top 4:
1. Vegas
2. NYC
3. Miami
4. LA
Due to 2am alcohol shutoff etc, regardless, nightlife in GENERAL is alive and well.
