Take the train for sure if you decide to go. The new 'Falcon' ones get you there in 3 or 4 hours - about the same time as flying and it's much less hassle.
After saying that, I'm not sure that St. Petersburg will do much for you. It's more conservative and will be quiet at the moment because of the end of the study year.
It also depends on what you're trying to achieve there. If it's only for a few bangs, you'll likely have the same experience as in Moscow, but it could be slightly slower. If you're looking for a long-term girl to take back to the US (or elsewhere), the odds of finding one are better in Moscow and other cities. Don't forget that Ukraine is definitely prime hunting ground for that at the moment as well.
