I wonder how "loved" he'll feel in 9 years
A great athlete can not fantasize 9 years into the future.
His current emotional climate is the only emotional climate he can consider. Whatever makes him feel/believe all powerful NOW. His Athletic Life is over in 4-5 years, he must serve and enhance that Athletic Life even at the expense of his Post-Athletic Life.
In other words, if Dwayne believes that Gabrielle Union makes him a better player, he almost certainly must tap into that belief and become a player -- even if that means divorce later. The Athletic Life takes priority over the Post Athletic life.
A broken heart or a divorce is the least of his concerns. He has already sacrificed much more than that to be in the position he is in.
Athletes will sacrifice everything for a chance to win championships and go to the Hall of Fame.
I suspect that she makes his children feel happy and safe, which in turn gives him peace of mind and contentment, thus making him a better player.
One could make a case that he is basically using her as an emotional tampon to maximize his basketball talents and thus make himself even more fame and money.
