Earl Nightingale - The Strangest Secret

What is success? According to Earl Nightingale, success is really nothing more than a progressive realization of a worthy ideal. Here is his checklist for achieving your ideal and living a more successful, enjoyable, and meaningful life.

1. A Goal!

Where are you going? Why do you get up in the morning? Without an ultimate goal to navigate by, you wander aimlessly through life.

2. Attitude!

The most important word in any language in the world. Because your attitude towards the world and everyone in it determines the attitude of the world and everyone in it towards you.

The world reacts to you according to you; it's the greatest gift you've been given. Only man has the godlike power to make his surroundings change to fit him. All he has to do is improve and his environment will improve along with him.

3. Think!

The highest function of which a human being is capable. The only thing about a man that is a man is his mind. Everything else you can find on a pig or a horse.

If you want to develop something, this is the place to start. Everyday, write your ultimate goal at the top of a piece of paper and come up with new ideas related to that goal.

4. The Law of Cause and Effect!

Your rewards in life will be in exact proportion to your contribution. If you want more out of life, contribute more. Find ways to increase your service to the world! All of us are given the same blank slate of a human life; not everyone puts out the effort to do as much with that life.

5. Truth!

Everything has an equal and opposite reaction. So unless what you're building is based on truth, you're building on sand.

6. R&D!

Research and Development. How much of the money you make are you pumping back into yourself and your future? Invest in your own skills and development.

7. The Strangest Secret!

What makes a child grow up into the person that he becomes?

He becomes what he thinks about most of the time. That's the strangest secret. This is why your goal and thinking about it so much is so important.

This is also the secret referred to in "Think and Grow Rich," who would have also stated it as "Thoughts are things." Note: Don't confuse this with the simplified idea of the law of attraction - it's much more complex than that.

Beyond All Seas

"The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe.
To be your own man is a hard business. If you try it, you'll be lonely often, and sometimes
frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself." - Kipling
