Compared to so many other guitar virtuosos out there Kirk really can't compete. However I do agree completely with his solos in many of Metallica songs, they are just the way they should be and nothing can take that away from Kirk.
Kirk is a really really good guitarrist, you can clearly see/hear it by his solo composition in many songs, his playing speed and use of different picking techniques through the years. His live playing is also really good. You don't have to like Metallica to recognize this.
Also Kirk is one of many early influences to young guys just starting to play guitar. Ask any veteran experienced guitar player about his early influences, chances are Kirk is on his list.
