Dont totally agree, fucked up ideologies seem to persist in even tough conditions. Marriage itself is one lol. Although I think you're partly right, some things really are only possible in an abundant world with plentiful food.
The west wont regress to Asian-like cultures though, even if we became alot poorer. We're just not confucian or collectivist or shame-based in the same way, and likely never will be. The chinese marriage thing is based as much in the idea of honoring your ancestors and family bloodline etc as it is in practical reasons.
