America took in huge waves of immigrants from Ireland, Poland, Russia, Mexico, etc., and for the most part the culture here is to push them to assimilate quickly. The first generation doesn't always succeed to do so, but the second generation (their kids) usually have good command of English and start working and moving up in class. This means that the 2nd generation already feels more 'American' than 'XXXX' culture or religion.
