I never use rollers. less efficient, heavier, harder to fit into overhead bins, often don't fit in sizers. I never ever check anything in, even international.
Usually I use a vintage Rimowa cabin case (non roller version), Briggs and Riley "235x" (discontinued though) http://bagmaster.net/5073.html or a Filson Medium Travel bag: http://www.filson.com/products/travel-ba...70246.html
for my personal item i use a patagonia backpack or a Filson 257 briefcase depending on what I need to do.
I may get a roller though, Rimowa aluminum or polycarbonate...leaning towards aluminum for the aesthetics. But, if you want a good carry on..maybe the Briggs and Riley expandable international widebody....external telescoping handle to give you more room and its wide for more room.
they are expensive though.....may also get a GORUCK military spec backpack to replace my patagonia as its very sleek looking.
