I think it's good etiquette to avoid situations where you're encroaching on some other guy's "claim" as it were, and apparently they approached them first... But, the chicks were obviously more interested in you than them.
Violence is definitely best avoided though (mostly for legal reasons), so, I think you were smart for booking it when you got vibes.
