great post OG...I've been back in NYC for about 2 weeks now after a 5 week trip in Colombia. Some of my friends have outright cut me off when I start bringing up my trip or start talking about my future plans. Save a few friends the large majority have acted passively aggressively towards my trips. And this is in Manhattan! Where people are mostly from somewhere else and mostly have more open-minded attitudes about the world, etc. As you say...we're changing/growing and they're not and I think it kills them.
Just in the last few days I've been searching out Colombians and other foreigner groups in NYC (restaurants, meetups, etc). These people tend to be more open minded, well traveled, and connected...much more my speed.
