Morbidly obese American woman unable to fit on plane

That's a startling & somewhat surprising stat considering how many New Yorkers walk much more than the typical American due to not having cars, using public transportation, and walking around the dense city in general. But then I think about the food deserts and the horrible food selection in the Qwik E Mart type joints in the ghetto areas (ie. parts of Bronx, Brooklyn, etc.) & then I'm not so surprised anymore. On the flip side, you see some of the hottest model type chicks in the world hanging out in Manhattan and stuff too lol.

@Houston: 1/3rd??? In New York City it is at least 75-85 percent. I take the train from Brooklyn to Manhattan 5x a week, and most people can't even walk up the stairs...

Most overweight city in america?

According to the Board of Health in NYC, half of New Yorkers are overweight. Half of the overweight are considered obese. Yes, the BMI isn't the most accurate measure, but we all know obese when we see it. There's obese, and then morbidly obese beyond that. I'm not sure if NY is THE fattest city, but it's definitely near the top if not #1.

You would think that because NYC is conducive to walking, most people do. Not true. When people think if NYC, they think of Manhattan. That's where people come to work, but many live in the outer boroughs, which for the most part AREN'T conducive to walking. You're riding public transportation or driving in the outer boroughs. Given the choice between walking stairs and riding an escalator, people will ride the escalator. Also, people work long hours in an office, and eat take out. Fast food joints are packed at lunchtime and in the evenings. People eat deli food. It isn't a hood/ghetto thing - even in areas like the Upper East and Upper West side eat that way.
