I hate set-ups, I refuse them 99% of the time. I accepted one a few weeks ago, what a nightmare.
The problem is, you never know what your friends tell the gal about you. It's amazing how some actual truth becomes blemished as the friend tells it, and then the gal receives it totally different in her mind.
Why go into battle not knowing what the expectations are? Usually, if it's a setup, I'll tell her to invite some (female) friends to come have one drink with my (guy) friends on so-and-so night. That way, there's at least a chance that someone will pair up, versus going into a 1-on-1 setup where there's nothing but rumor that your mutual friend passed along, usually unwisely.
