I agree much more with Pepini, no matter the differences in different parts, the language remains Portuguese and they can understand each other as much as a native spanish speaking has no problem in other romanic language countries.
You just have to adpat your ear, change a few pronounciations and there you go.
I do that with portuguese, italian, galllego, catalan...etc there is very little problem.
Would be the same for a swedish understanding each other with a dane, they have talk more patiently, but they can understand each other.
Doesn't happen the same with german and its dialects, though, you will understand very little of the different dialects in any region, even if you speak proficient Standard Deutsch.
