I think it is a great idea to prepare on a non-specific basis, ie not for a "pole shift" or "hurricane" but for all eventualities by simply having a few months' worth of food, lights and water. You can have a rolling stock that you just eat and replenish as you go. This would even come in handy if you lost your job or had any kind of other disruption. No savings account or investment is as inflation-proof as already having the actual goods.....
