No, it only starts there.
The effort is in going out a lot and working while doing so instead of hanging out with your friends, or playing xbox at home. This alone is a lot of work which most people aren't willing to put.
The effort is in keeping yourself presentable and in an acceptable shape all the time - good fitting clothes (which may not necessary be the most comfortable and cheap), exercising, cutting on crappy foods, keeping your apartment in an acceptable condition so it doesn't look like a typical nerd lair basement, and so on.
The effort is in being social much more than you are used to. For a dude who is a book reader type this is significant effort.
The effort is in dealing with the weird, drunk and obnoxious people you'd rather avoid. This one actually might change your personality to the level when your friends cannot even talk to you anymore.
The effort is in risking to bring home a psycho, a stalker, get false rape accusations and so on.
