Go back and watch old films (pre 1965), notice how Sean Connery's James Bond dresses; observe Cary Grant in North by Northwest; observe guys like David Niven, Errol Flynn, Clark Gable....think timeless.

One good guide is Gentleman: a Timeless Fashion by Bernhard Roetzel.

Pinterest can give you some ideas.

J. Crew catalogues are good, as are magazines such as GQ and Esquire.

The main thing is fit. Ill-fitting clothing, no matter how recognized the brand name, will look awful.

Avoid synthetic materials. They look hideous and are bad for your skin.

Rule #1: think timeless. What are some things that never go out of style?
Rule #2: Don't be dazzled by brand names to the point where you forget about fit, season, or timelessness. You won't impress anyone by wearing an Armani jacket that is two sizes too big and is clearly outdated.
Rule #3: Stick with cotton, wool, cashmere, silk, and other high-quality natural materials. Say no to polyester, rayon, nylon, acryllic, etc.
