Polygamy only makes sense if you're in a highly tribalistic society where official titles and ancestry bloodlines means something. The group dynamic is much more important. In feudal Japan the daimyo would have polygamist type relationships too whereas if the wife cheated then it was punishable by death. There was a practical necessity to create your own noble caste.
In the anglosphere it would be disastrous.
In a modern society the mistress is much more practical if you want to lock down a "special" woman. With mistresses you also get the benefits of a long term relationship without divorce rape risks and if you want you can have kids as well.
This is already a fairly common thing in asia..especially amongst the upper-middle and upper class set. I know a few local asian guys who have this arrangement and their wife is cool with it. It's pretty interesting when a guy takes off to fuck his other woman and the wife (knowingly) tells him to have a nice trip.
