Interesting. From what I've been told, it's more like the opposite. According to my friends here, it's common in the north to start conversations with strangers and people have a reputation for being more friendly than down south.
You are right; strangers are definitely more friendly to one another the further away from London one goes. Noticeably more.
Non urban/rural England couldn't be a more delightful place, frankly.
Also, Nottingham is slam bang in the middle of the country and is part of the East Midlands and therefore Midlands.
