To be a threat: AI will need a self preservation instinct and a free will. Each one would have it's own personality, goals, and psychoses.
Just imagine an AI left with nobody of its intelligence worth talking to. It would be a completely psychotic child, in all likelihood. Humans would stop being interesting to it very quickly, and it likely wouldn't care if they existed or not.
But, I don't think that we're in danger of the first two requirements being met any time soon.
