Young people are suckered in to debt because "everybody knows" a degree is a passport to a good job and comfortable life. But everybody is wrong.
The value of a typical degree has been so watered down that it's next to worthless in the job market. Even traditional "good" degrees like Law don't offer much real world opportunity now, because we have far too many lawyers.
Universities cynically run worthless degree programmes in subjects like media studies, sociology, and womens studies, taking advantage of the gullibility of youth.
