For every female emotional response to something, there is almost always an equal and opposite male response, this is just one of those times. Preselection works, but only to such a degree. A male 7 needs preselection from female 6's or higher for the effect to be a gain, a female 4 may even make him look worse.
I think your model example might fall under this.
