Meet The World's Latest Self-Made Multi-Billionaire: Elizabeth Holmes of Theranos

Great story. Interesting little tidbit from the Wired interview:

Where do you see this making a big difference?

Fertility testing is a good example. Most people pay for it out of pocket, and it can cost as much as $2,000. These tests provide the data you need to figure out someone’s fertility, and some women can’t afford them. Our new fertility panel is going to cost $35. That means women will be able to afford the tests. They’ll be able to better manage the process and take some of the stress out of trying to conceive.

This woman was extremely courageous. The common path to take when it comes to biotech is to put your head down and get your Bachelor's degree, and then put your head down further and get your PhD or, even "better," your MD/PhD. To drop out of Stanford, probably recognizing most of the classes she would have to take were perhaps interesting but almost completely irrelevant to what she's doing... she must have had people telling her she was crazy. Major, major props to her.

However, I have to call her out, she was probably very in the know before she dove head-first into this. Her staying out of the limelight was perfectly by design. From Theranos' wikipedia page:

Quote:Quote:

The company has been secretive about its plans and operations in order to maintain confidentiality - “operating deeply in ‘stealth mode’” - and has rarely spoken to the media.[1] In 2007, Theranos filed suit in court in Santa Clara accusing former employers of breaching company secrecy.[1] Theranos filed suit in California against a former partner of McDermott Will & Emery for theft of intellectual property, but the case was dismissed in June 2012; another case against the law company in Washington, D.C. was also dismissed in August 2013.[6][7]

She's obviously smart, but some other sparse interviews also show she comes from an affluent background and she had experiences in labs around the world as a kid. Not exactly a rags-to-riches story... she definitely knew how to play the game.

Oh yea...
