In Russia it's irrelevant whether the work is paid, paid in kind (eg. with flights, accommodation, gifts, etc.), or unpaid. Interns and volunteers are also required to have work permits or to be enrolled at a local university.
There wasn't any 'trick' involved, IMO. To apply for a tourist visa, he had to indicate that the purpose of his stay in Russia was tourism. I'm surprised that he wasn't deported a lot earlier, to be honest. The only explanation I can think of is that he's famous only to a small group of internet followers and has little impact on the ground.
