It's so bizarre.
I haven't really noticed it much. But we've traditionally referred to some gender neutral objects with "she", such as ships, cars, airplanes, the planet itself(e.g., "let's keep her oceans clean"), anything nature related such as mountains and rivers, entire nations e.g. "mother Russia", "Lady Liberty", etc., entire continents, "the motherland Africa", etc etc.
