Such a peaceful and lovely little town too but get's pretty dark at night even in the tourist areas and lots of little streets so probably a good place for muggers to pray on tourists.

São Paulo is very similar to this. In one area you will feel that you're in Paris or NYC and some tube stations away you will feel that you are in Nigeria.
I was told SP was really dangerous before I went but I felt much less threatned there than I did in other Brazilian / South American cities, not that I really ever felt in danger in any but SP seemed really safe to me. Wasn't worried at all and went all over town to lots of different areas, sometimes walked home for miles, drunk and alone.
