Most places, this would have been eventually dismissed with payment of court costs and maybe some community service. Not sure about Alabama, but someone should have taken the kid aside and let him know this. Unfortunately, most adults in his life were probably threatening him with dire consequences.

This is also what happens when you have demented prosecutors empowered by the "law and order" mindset.
