I think it's pretty fucked that the punishment you are sentenced for is to be removed from society for a certain number of months or years, but the implied punishment is also to be exposed to a lot of violence and rape. There are many crimes that can involve years-long incarcerations but not many crimes that deserve getting beaten and raped for years.
There was one somewhat local case of a guy who got arrested on a DUI, he was slightly over the legal limit. They threw him in the drunk tank because he was a little belligerent and ended up getting beaten unconscious by a homeless person and raped several times. He contracted HIV. Where are the feminists saying that this shouldn't have happened?
If inmate protection can't be somewhat guaranteed, jails should just be declared unconstitutional.
