I grew up without one at all, and I could definitely be described as violent and with a poor sense of discipline throughout my young adulthood, even now (though I do rope in the violent tendencies as much as possible these days). As a teen, I was the guy my friends' parents did not want them hanging out with. I'm almost certain these tendencies were due to having no father figure in the home offering guidance and keeping me in check.
