Personally, I like to take drugs then proceed as normal - sitting in a chair for hours on end isn't a particularly exciting thought, even if I'm off my face.
It's more the mental component. It's a bit easier to function on/after hallucinogens if you've taken them before, and if you're used to the after effects, you're probably less likely to get all weird after you take it (the whole spiritual experience thing).
