I think some people fantasize about the ability to have a societal, or global "reset"
They think that we could start from scratch and not make the same mistakes, or that many of the ills of civilization would reverse themselves
When times get worse, there are a few truths:
1) Governments and those in power seek greater measures of control over people
2) People look for scapegoats, or start to identify on a more tribal/nationalistic level
If anything, the global deleveraging is going to inspire numerous courses, theories, books, etc. on how "The Patriarchy Caused The Crash"
You're already hearing the beginnings of this, with talk of men taking "macho risks", and if there were more diversity and females in front office finance, we wouldn't have the same problems with greed, fraud and malinvestment.
