Some bacteria that cause armpit odour are found on the hair shaft. They feed off hair oil/sebum, and in the process of breaking down the oil they make a foul odour. So when you shave your armpits you pretty much make those bacteria homeless and your hair shafts turn down the oil production.
I shave my armpits too and I use baking soda more as a backup, especially on hot sweaty days.
