I think it really depends on the field. In the physical sciences a lot of companies have technical Fellows. It's a job that pays quite a bit more than the rank and file scientists make and is usually given to guys who've made the company a lot of money once they get into their late 40s early 50s-probably to keep them from running off to a competitor.
